Like a breath of fresh air, I provide you with a slightly different way of seeing and feeling about photography sessions. I believe that beautiful moments are everywhere and those moments are easily found when people are in their favourite places or going about their routines on an ordinary day.
Why should you hire me?
I’m not a typical family photographer – in fact, no two sessions are ever the same! The goal is to curate a meaningful set of images for you, about you. There’s absolutely no need to fuss over fancy outfits or stress about the perfect location; I want to help you embrace the real beauty that surrounds you every day. The photo shoot itself can be completely unscripted and spontaneous or you may plan a couple small activities for our time together. In either case, my priority is to reveal all of the magical moments as they unfold.
Here are five fabulous reasons you will want to consider working together:
» no uncomfortable poses or looking directly into the camera with fake smiles all of the time
» the spotlight shines on your story and relationships within your family
» you don’t have to leave home or worry about the weather
» everyone can wear whatever they want
» being real + different is awesome! 🙂
With any session, my priority is to celebrate the little things that make you and your loved ones extraordinary.
What will we do during the shoot?
The possibilities truly are endless! My favourite thing to do is simply hang out and photograph people in their homes or favourite spaces (in a similar manner to how I photograph my own family and the wonderful people in my life).
For example, if you’re on vacation at the cottage I’ll meet up and we can capture people in their element, like jumping off the end of the dock or fishing off the shore (or both!). We can also photograph preparing and everyone enjoying a barbecue feast on the deck.
If you have young children, we typically plan an exciting activity or two to keep them engaged and interacting with you and their siblings. This type of session is also an opportunity to record your day-to-day routines because as the kids get older those bedtime rituals will evolve and bath time will never be as fun as with preschoolers and bubbles (trust me on that one!).
With older kids it is best to plan a special outing or adventure to keep their focus off of the lady with the camera.
I know shooting in your house may sound crazy … but it’s amazing!
Let me put your mind at ease, I don’t care if your house is messy or full of dust bunnies. Not for one second. All homes (especially with kids) have ‘stuff’ everywhere and it happens to be a beautiful and fleeting part of your life. Think about it, the little Lego pieces everywhere will be gone one day! These are the scenes you will want to remember in 10, 25, or 50 years from now. Your home is the heartbeat of your family and usually where everyone is happiest and most comfortable – in my opinion, it’s the best place on earth for your session. You will have a chance to let me know what areas you don’t want me taking photos and tidy the other spaces as if you were preparing for a friend to come over to visit (again, that’s entirely up to you). This is a no stress, no fuss photo session … no spotless house required. 😉
Will I take a few portraits?
Definitely! Everyone wants that one nice family photo to send to the grandparents and I know that’s an important part of a professional photography experience. Remember how I said that I won’t ask you to look at the camera? Well, we can make a tiny exception for a handful of informal, loosely posed portraits. Just remember that my heart lies in the documentation of your story. This portion of the session will take up no more than 5-10 minutes of our time and we won’t be forcing anyone to flash a “cheeeeeeeeeese-y” grin.
How long will I spend with you and your family?
In general, these sessions take longer and you can choose whatever suits your schedule and needs best. The great news is that you end up more photos! We can spend 1-2 hours together during a standard Storytelling Session, or 4 or more hours for my signature Savour This Day session. If you have something else in mind, don’t hesitate to drop me a note.
Can I show you more examples of my work?
Sure! This is an example of a Storytelling Session:
